mindfulness weight management program“Mindfulness is about being fully awake in our lives. It is about perceiving the exquisite vividness of each moment. We also gain immediate access to our own powerful inner resources for insight, transformation, and healing.” –  Jon Kabat-Zinn

Mindfulness has been at the core of our program here at Green Mountain at Fox Run since our inception over 40 years ago. Over the years, we’ve heard a lot of confusion about what mindfulness really meansand how to eat, exercise, and well, live more mindfully.

That’s why we are so pleased to announce our upcoming weekend program: Mindfulness for Women Who Struggle With Weight. But first, we want to dispel some myths about mindfulness and weight loss.

3 Myths & Truths About Mindfulness

1 Mindfulness is not another type of diet

Mindfulness won’t tell you what to eat, how much to consume, how often to exercise, or how to live your life.

…It is a practice about listening to your own inner voice

Your body knows what it needs – or at least can give you a pretty good idea if you learn to listen to it rather than the tens (hundreds? thousands? millions?) of diets and exercise regimens you’ve tried, and that have failed you in the past.

Our mindfulness-based program gives you your best shot at succeeding in achieving your goals, finding your healthy weight, and feeling your best by listening to your body and guiding you to make healthier + more supportive choices.

2 Mindfulness is not something you only do while meditating

We teach meditation here at Green Mountain, but being mindful doesn’t just mean finding your mantra and meditating for an hour a day (and mindful exercise doesn’t just mean yoga & tai chi!).

…It is something you can incorporate into every action

Whether the “action” be eating, exercise, drinking coffee, doing dishes, completing a crossword puzzle… and fill in the blank here. When we say any action we really mean anything.

The more often you’re checking in with yourself and in the present moment , the better you can assess your needs and attend to them to promote a healthier and happier lifestyle.

3 Mindfulness is not a new-age buzzword

Even though mindfulness has been incorporated in medical treatment since the development of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction in 1979, the idea of mindfulness being able to change your life is still a little hard to believe.

…It is a long-standing and proven practice

Unlike other new-age lifestyle programs, mindfulness is medically proven to benefit health, and has acted as “medicine” for over 5,000 years.

More than 100 studies have shown the positive impact of mindfulness on our brains around our ability to manage stress and emotions – two things that often drive women who struggle with weight to binge and emotional eating.

Challenges of Becoming More Mindful

But if you’ve made it this far you probably already know all of the proven benefits of mindfulness.

The challenge for most women who visit us is figuring out how to realistically incorporate mindfulness into their daily lives in a way that will help them reach and maintain their healthy weight and find overall improved health, happiness, and well-being.

… That’s where we come in.
